NME Launches Australian Print Magazine

NME Australia First Cover Tash Sultana

Wednesday 29 April 2020 — Legendary media powerhouse NME is delighted to announce the launch of a monthly print magazine in Australia. The new print magazine shines a spotlight on stories from Australia and beyond, including exclusive interviews, reviews and essays from some of the best writers and photographers, locally and internationally. From music and movies, to TV and gaming, NME will be featuring the bleeding edge of what’s new and what’s next. The first ever print issue is available to preorder now and will be in readers’ hands May onwards.

This exciting print introduction follows last December’s launch of NME.com/Australia, and the addition of Australia exclusive award categories at the 2020 NME Awards in February (described as “the craziest awards show ever” by none other than Taylor Swift).

CEO of BandLab Technologies, Meng Ru Kuok says “Since the launch of our NME Australia site in December 2019, we’ve seen huge interest from fans, artists and the music industry, with half a million monthly Australian readers visiting NME.com/Australia for their music and pop culture fix.

While the print edition in the UK is still on hiatus, we decided there was nowhere better to re-introduce print than Australia. It’s a big country with one of the most dynamic music scenes in the world right now, and of course, there’s no better time than now, when people are seeking compelling content, engaging news and home-based entertainment.”

Cover artist for the inaugural Aussie issue, Tash Sultana says, “I’m really stoked about it. Honestly I just can’t wait to give a copy of the issue to my mum and to my grand parents. I know my pa will be showing it all over the retirement village, some could even say he thinks he’s a rockstar now.”

In the first edition, as well as going deep with cover star Tash Sultana, NME talks to Mallrat on her upcoming debut album: “We only want to make aspirational music”, Cable Ties share their approach to making music in dangerous times: “Find something to fight for and be hopeful about”; while Riz Ahmed goes deep on growing up in the UK, his rap career and his new album ‘The Long Goodbye’.

NME has assembled a super group of Aussie music and pop culture writers, supported by its editorial teams in Singapore and London. Aussie contributors in the first issue include (in alphabetical order) Luke Buckmaster, Kate Hennessy, Ian Laidlaw, Brodie Lancaster, Kara Eva Schlegl, Andrew P Street, and Cyclone Wehner.
