NME today announce that the greatest rock’n’roll party of the year will be opened by two of Britain’s brightest talents, mercurial Northampton rapper slowthai and Grammy award winning producer Mura Masa. The duo’s recent smash collaboration ‘Deal Wiv It’ perfectly encapsulates the punk spirit of the NME Awards and will no doubt kick the show off to a rip-roaring start.

“I’m coming to win all the awards (including Godlike Genius) and if there’s one i don’t win then i’ll take it from them anyway. Me and Mura Masa are excited to headline the awards and play our unfortunately rejected-in-favour-of-Billie-Eilish James Bond theme song yet still number-one-multi-platinum single ‘Deal Wiv It’. All those that perform after us are simply the dessert… the digestif… the followers… the laggards. Except IDLES, if my brothers are playing then it’s a co-headline. If they’re not playing, why not?! Brixton is mine. As you were.” – says slowthai.

With Mura Masa adding “Any opportunity to play with Ty is a dream. You never know what’s going to happen and i think this will be especially unpredictable”.

NME are also delighted to share the winner of a special award which marks outstanding achievement in a phenomenal decade of music. Swedish pop icon Robyn receives the Songwriter of the Decade accolade for her invaluable contribution to and influence on today’s pop landscape. Her iconic single Dancing On My Own topped NME’s recent Best Songs Of The Decade list, and this award celebrates Robyn as a truly unique artist whose legacy will continue to inspire into this new decade and beyond.

“I’m always mystified and ready to be seduced by a beautiful song. There are so many good songs that were written before and after 2010 that inspired me. So I feel very humbled and honored to be given this award” says Robyn.

The NME Awards, the most raucous night in music, return to the O2 Academy Brixton on February 12th to celebrate the last 12 months of artists, records and performances. Last week it was announced that Katherine Ryan and Julie Adenuga will be hosting the show, that AJ Tracey is set to perform on the night alongside The 1975, Yungblud and Beabadoobee, and that Courtney Love will receive the Icon award.

This year’s NME Awards nominations are led by slowthai, The 1975, Yungblud, Billie Eilish, AJ Tracey, FKA twigs, Lizzo, Charli XCX, Stormzy and Lana Del Rey with multiple nods each. The NME Awards are shortlisted, debated and decided by the core NME team staking a claim for curation, critical voice and an immutable belief in the greatest artists in the world. A select number of awards will be voted for by the fans, and voting is open now for Hero Of The Year, Villain Of The Year, Music Moment Of The Year. This year’s NME Awards charity partner is Nordoff Robbins, the UK’s largest independent music therapy charity, chosen for their excellent work in supporting people affected by life limiting illness, isolation or disability through musical engagement.
